In September, 2010 I will be serving as a Course Adviser and Moderator at a two (2) day AAJ Nursing Home Litigation Group educational program in Miami, FL.
In July, 2010, I will be attending the AAJ Annual Convention in Vancouver, BC, Canada. I anticipate being elected Chair of the AAJ Nursing Home Litigation Group at that time.
I will be attending and participating in the VTLA Board of Governors meeting in Virginia Beach, VA during June, 2010.
Also, during June, 2010 I attended a two (2) day AAJ NHLG Trial College held at the AAJ National Headquarters in Washington, DC. The Trial College focused on the analysis of Medicare Cost Reports.
In April, 2010 I was a speaker at the New Jersey Association of Justice (NJAJ) Annual Boardwalk Convention held in Atlantic City, NJ. My presentation was entitled: Medical Director – Friend or Foe?
I attended the VTLA Annual Convention in Williamsburg, VA during March, 2010. At that time I was elected Chair of the VTLA Long-Term Care Litigation Section for the second year in a row. I also moderated a Long-Term Care Litigation Section program/luncheon held during the Convention.
During February, 2010 I served as a speaker and moderator at a full day VTLA Long-Term Care Litigation Section educational program that was primarily organized by me. The program was held in Richmond, VA. Over eighty persons attended and several nationally known speakers were featured. The program was featured in an extensive front page article printed in Virginia Lawyers Weekly. Several of the speakers, including me, were quoted in the article.
In July, 2009, I attended the AAJ Annual Convention in San Francisco, CA. At that time I was elected Chair-Elect of the AAJ Nursing Home Litigation Group.
During June, 2009 I attended and served as a Moderator at the AAJ Nursing Home Litigation Continuing Legal Education program held in Memphis, TN.
On May 13, 2009 I was elected the first ever Chair of the newly formed VTLA Long-Term Care Litigation Section that was primarily organized by me.
On April, 22, 2009 I attended an AAJ NHLG Regional Meeting in Atlantic City, NJ where I gave a presentation about my participation in the AMDA Annual Symposium in Charlotte, NC the previous month.
I was a guest speaker before approximately 300 physicians at the American Medical Directors Association (AMDA) Annual Symposium held in Charlotte, NC in March 2009. This was the second year in a row I was asked to speak at AMDA’s Annual Symposium.
I was in New Orleans, LA for the AAJ Mid-Winter Convention from February 5-11, 2009 where I attended several personal injury/medical malpractice educational seminars.
In November, 2008 I gave a presentation at the Tennessee Association For Justice 1st Annual Nursing Home Seminar held in Nashville, TN.
In October, 2008 I served as a moderator at a two (2) day nursing home educational program in Austin, TX presented by the American Association For Justice Nursing Home Litigation Group.
During July, 2008 I attended the AAJ Annual Convention in Philadelphia, PA and spoke at the Litigation Group Leaders’ meeting. I was also elected Vice-Chair of the 350+ members of the Nursing Home Litigation Group.
I attended a four (4) day AAJ Nursing Home Trial College in Ft. Lauderdale, FL in June 2008.
In April, 2008 I attended and presented at an AAJ NHLG Regional Meeting in Atlantic City, NJ.
In March of 2008 I spoke at the American Medical Directors Association’s Annual Symposium in Salt Lake City, UT. My presentation was entitled ” A Plaintiff’s Medical Malpractice Lawyer’s Perspective of the Medical Director’s Responsibilities and Potential Liabilities”.
During March, 2008 I attended the VTLA Annual Convention at the Homestead Resort in Hot Springs, VA.
In January, 2008 I attended the five (5) day AAJ Mid-Winter Convention in San Juan, PR.
In February of 2007 I attended the five (5) day American Association for Justice (AAJ) [formerly known as Association of Trial Lawyers of America (ATLA)] Mid-Winter Convention in Miami, FL. There were several nursing home abuse and personal injury educational presentations given there.
In March of 2007 I was recognized as an Advocate by the AAJ National College of Advocacy.
Additionally, in March of 2007, I was sent by the AAJ Nursing Home Litigation Group (NHLG) to Hollywood, FL to attend the four (4) day American Medical Directors Association (AMDA) Annual Symposium. I gave a live presentation at the AAJ NHLG business meeting held in Chicago, IL in July of 2007, during which I educated NHLG members about current long term care issues discussed at the AMDA Symposium
On April 26, 2007 I gave a live nursing home presentation to the Association of Trial Lawyers of America – New Jersey in Atlantic City, NJ.
In May, 2007 I gave live presentations to members of the Virginia Trial Lawyers Association (VTLA) in Richmond, Fairfax, Roanoke and Norfolk. The subject matter of my presentation was nursing home/assisted living related. I also served as moderator of the speaker panel at each location.
In June, 2007 I served as the moderator of a panel of speakers at a NHLG advanced seminar held in Boston, MA.
During July of 2007 I attended the five (5) day AAJ Annual Convention in Chicago, IL and gave two live presentations. I was also elected Secretary/Treasurer of the Nursing Home Litigation Group.
On September 11, 2007 I spoke to approximately fifty Rockingham Memorial Hospital physical, occupational and speech therapy employees at the RMH Wellness Center about the importance of ensuring proper patient documentation.
During September, 2007 I spoke at a NHLG educational conference in Las Vegas, NV. My topic was NG and PEG tube use in nursing homes.
In October, 2007 I attended the annual National Citizens’ for Nursing Home Reform (NCCNHR) conference in Washington, DC.
Press coverage of my cases includes articles in the Lynchburg News & Advance regarding a nursing home abuse case I tried in 2006 before a jury in Lynchburg, VA (a very conservative jurisdiction). In that case the defendants did not offer a penny to settle the case. The jury, after three full days of trial and six (6) hours of deliberation, found in favor of my client and awarded monetary damages. I have been told there had not been a plaintiff’s medical malpractice verdict in that court for several years prior to my success.
Virginia Lawyers Weekly (VLW) published an article recognizing the Senior Citizens Law Day program that I recently helped develop in Harrisonburg, VA. As one of the participating lawyers, I was able to give advice to approximately 130 seniors and their families at the event. The program is being offered again in Harrisonburg in 2008.
Facts about one of my West Virginia nursing home cases (I have been admitted Pro Hac Vice there several times) were printed in a book recently published by the National Citizens’ for Nursing Home Reform (NCCNHR) that was presented to all of the members of Congress.
An article written by me entitled “When to say I’m out of here: A quick guide to ex parte contacts” was published in the VTLA quarterly journal. I was asked to write the article after I won a very important Motion in the Circuit Court of Lancaster County, VA involving one of my litigated nursing home cases.
To help further the cause of nursing home/assisted living reform I have joined both the Assisted Living Consumer Alliance (ALCA) and the Elder Alliance. I have also joined the Christian Trial Lawyers Association (CTLA).
During July of 2006 I attended the annual five (5) day ATLA Convention in Seattle WA, which included numerous educational programs related to nursing home abuse and personal injury litigation.
In October of 2006 I attended a three (3) day conference in Memphis, TN hosted by the NHLG. Presentations included both nursing home and assisted living topics. In October, 2006 I also attended the annual NCCNHR conference in Washington, DC. During the same month I also attended a two (2) day educational conference in Williamsburg, VA sponsored by the VTLA.
